Default TIMING - Motor Assembled, Need Help Setting Initial Timing *PIC*

I just finished basically assembling my entire motor, everything is done I can think of almost except some small stuff and sourcing a Z6 fuel rail and TIMING

Ive got the head on and torqued down with all 4 pistons in mid stroke

Let me just say this before I start typing. This is my first ever attempt at anything major and have never done nor do I truely understand engine timing so I may ask some stupid questions.

The Facts:
Motor is a D16a6 head and block
Head is milled .040
AEM Tru Time Cam gear installed
Timing retarded 4* right now (by reading the points on teh cam gear)
D16y8 headgasket

Alright so I really need some help on how to make this work. If it matters this will be my daily driver and will be boosting 15-17 pounds on it. I hink the initial timing is 12* BTDC right?

I really just need help I guess on just getting the timing belt on, adjusting the cam gear to were it is supposed to be and everythign in between. DOG posted a good link from redpepperracing.com but the link isnt working

IF anyone could modify my pics or just tell me what to do from the picture I would greatly appreciate it. This is the last part of my build other than installing my new OBX equipped tranny and Clutch Specialties 6 puck clutch and of course the turbo install

Thanks for any help

you nee to take the crank pulley off and route the timing belt around the water pump, tensioner, crank and cam gears, while keeping the engine(top and bottom) at tdc

how do I get the head at top dead center

Is it when the cam gear lines are paralel with the valve cover? then I find tdc of the pistons , lock the timing belt, set the cam timing and im done?

Cant the pistons hit if the valves arent on the right stage of the power cycle?

Default t belt

Ther are 2 marks on the cam gear. Alling the 2 marks so they are paralell to the head (not the valve cover). Also, there should be a mark on the crankshaft that allings w/ a mark on the oil pump. You shouldnt bend any valves if these marks are lined up. After timing belt is on, rotate the eninge by hand a few revolutions to make sure.

oh and about STRATCHING this belt into place..... I have no idea how to get it over, head and block are at TDC and the tensioner is pushed as far as I could downwards and tighetenned there and Ive got all the slack pulled and I still need a good bunch of slack to get it over, maybe 1/3 of an inch off the top of the cam gear to go

And to set the cam timing, so I just loosen the 3 bolts on the gear and spin the ******?

I guess I need to advance it 3* to compensate for my timing

what do you mean when u said you put the 4 pistons on mid stroke?? Number 1 cyclinder needs to be @ tdc on the intake stroke.

He's probably talking about what I said...

When you're assembling things you can put all 4 pistons at mid-stroke. Then when the head is on, you can spin the cam without worring about interference. I guess I should have said put the timing belt around the crank, tensioner, & waterpump, 'cause it's hard to work in around after the alternator belt & stuff is in the way. Once the cam is set, turn the crank DIRECTLY to #1tdc then put the timing belt onto the cam sprocket.

thanks for the help so far guys

Is the tensioner bolt as loose as it can get? If it is you should be able to put it on no problem. If not I would look it to making sure you got the right timing belt.
