So for years i've been using the old basic timing light since the dawn of time. Right now i'm on the market to get a new one, and have seen all these crazy timing lights with digital indicators and all kinds of bells and whistles. So what makes these better than the old standby?

I was just wondering what the advantage would be to have an adjustable timing light. I mean you want to setup with the factory timing marks on the crank pulley. Right?
I went to Autozone and they had like a $40 timing light and a $90 one or something. I asked whats the difference and what one does that the other doesnt. Digital readout... I saved the money and bought the regular $40 one that just blinks a light. Works how it should.
If you need a timing setting other than that of the factory pulley marks, or if you're running an aftermarket pulley with only a TDC mark, you'll want an adjustable light.
There was something that certain lights could do on older cars with a mechanical timing advance mechanism. I think most of that is computerized now that's why you have to put the computer in 'time' mode.
