Spark timing or camshaft timing?

What kind of engine?

I'll guess it's camshaft timing...

Remove the upper timing cover, turn the engine (FORWARD, using the CRANKshaft pulley) until the arrow in the camshaft sprocket is visible & starting to point upwards.

Now watch the crankshaft pulley. There's notches cut into the pulley, one to the right & 3 to the left. Stop turning when the single notch lines up with the pointer.

Now look at the camshaft pulley. There's little dimples out at the teeth, they should line up horizontally with the top of the head. Or maybe the top of the inner timing cover, depending on exactly which engine you have.
