Default Timing

this may be a stupid question beut here it geos.
i am trying to adjust my timing. i have done it before and it worked fine. now i just want to check it. but for some reason the timing lights don't work.
i hook the up right. red to + battery, black to - battery and the other part to plug wire one.
well nothing happens. i have used 2 different timing lights and the same thing both times.

anyone know what i am doing wrong?

Some timing lights require that then ignition pick-up lead MUST be oriented the correct direction when you clip it onto the #1 plug wire.. look for an arrow on the clip... if there is one, the arrow faces the driver side of the car.
