Similar to the problem I am having on my domestic, except it only happens when I have the clutch engaged. It is definitly the TOB on my car. On my Lude I have experienced no such problems. Sounds like you are on track with the TOB.

? How many miles and what is your driving style?

Is the sound under the hood or inside the car? If under the hood, sounds like the TO bearing. If more inside, is your car a cable clutch? I've seen on several cars that when the cable is old and the strands are starting to break, it creaks quite a bit. Will make the sound both going down and up.

I had this same problem. Lucky, the dealer replace my TO bearing under warranty. Good luck.
