Well It could be the new Thermostat went bad already, I have seen and had this happen to me two times before. I know this sounds like it could not be, but it is possible. I have had it happen on a Chevy 3.1, and it happened right away when I started the car. It has also happened to me on a Ford 5.0, and it worked fine for about a week or so and then the temp gauge would never get off of cold because the thermostat was stuck open. Well hope this helps, Jordan.
Is the top radiator hose getting hot? Does the radiator get hot? If yes to these, the thermostat is opening. If the hose is too hot to hang onto, then the temperature is somewhere near normal. If so, then it is the guage or sensor or wiring. Most temperature sensors work by changing resistance with temperature. Check it when cold for resistance, with an ohm meter, then check it again when the engine is hot and see if there is a difference. If so, then it is the wiring or guage. Good luck
Helm manual should tell you what resistance the sensor should have at different temperatures. Like if you put the sensor in a pot of hot water with a thermometer. Because even if it changes with temperature, it still might be wrong.
I'll try to remember to look that up for you. My book is for '95 but it's probably the same.

why thanks a lot Jim but i dont own a Helms manual...only a chiltons...could anyone scan this page in for me or post the numbers that i need for temps, places, etc....-Roger
I bet the connection between your ect and guage is bad or your ect switch is bad. It's located near under your distributor. Should be a single wire with a plug going over a what looks like a barb fitting

Sender for the temperature gauge...
133 F = 137 ohms
185 F = 46 ohms
212 F = 30 ohms
The book says if you short the sender wire to ground, then turn on the ignition, the gauge is supposed to climb towards the top (hot). But it says to turn it off before it actually gets there, so you don't damage the gauge.

This can't be overstated, the guage will fry if you don't shut the key off in time!
