Default Theory: A new breed of intercooler...

Ever seen the stealth bomber?

Half the reason it works is because they were able to design the exhaust to cool down immensely before it is released outside...

So: How did they do it? And can that same technology be put on a car?

---- Don't flame me, I'm not an idiot, this is the point of the "Tech" forum ----

The whole idea of an intercooler is to cool incoming air, not outgoing.

Cooling your exhaust gases would only result in decreased flow

Ah **** I should have clarified....

Obviosly there is no point to cool your exhaust gases...

BUT: Cooling your "boost" wouldn't be such a bad idea right? I'd think it could use the same technology...

they cool the exhaust by, in part, mixing it with the outside air, the objective is to reduce the IR signature of the aircraft. it is, in a sense an "intercooler" applying ambient air temperatures to the exhaust. same as air-to-air IC.

im totally lost. are you asking if you could cool the air charge the same way the stealth cools its exhaust?

Yes sir. But I guess the only way they cool the exhaust is by mixing in some outside air. Also known as air - air intercooler.

I think it helps they fly alot faster than any fan will draw or blow air, plus they are at altitudes where the air is cooler and denser. I think its just basically a glorified air to air cooler. Probably no more effective than an Air to liquid or water injection.

the ONLY reason they do the exhaust diffusing is to dissipate the heat trail. it infact reduces the thrust output of the turbine, in some instances.
as far as the air being denser at higher altitudes? no, it is much thinner, cooler, yes , but thinner.
