Default Temp sensor

I have tired to search with no luck. I have installed an autometer coolant temp gauge in my 90 model hatch with a b16 swap. The gauge power up and zero's out but does move from zero. I know for a fact the thermostat is opening. I was wondering if my ground really need to be close to the sender like the instruction state? I have it grounded under the dash.

Its got 1 wire on the sender. Its for the signal to the gauge. Then you have a switch 12 volt power and a ground on the back of the gauge.
