Default Teardown on an r18

We got an 06 civic in that was badly overheated. Tore it down to inspect the damage. Just thought some of you may be interested to see some of the changes they made.

Pretty noticable huh? How about the injectors and fuel rail bolted to the head instead of the intake manifold?

I guess they REALLY don't want people to use headers on their cars. And their basic log manifold design hardly looks like it would be good for power production. One more reason not to buy one of these cars if you care about anything other than basic transportation.

Why would Honda try to prevent people from Modding their cars?

It would be great for a turbo. Just a little adapter plate between it and the turbo. Couldn't get much easier than that.

Here's some more pictures in no particular order. Honda made alot of changes on it.

The cylinder bores are ofset to the exhaust side of the block. Notice only one side had to be notched for rod clearance. Uses oil squirter too.

The bottom end looks pretty solid.

Oil pan with integrated filter boss.

The pistons appear to be manufactured differently from honda norm.

The rear main seal doesnt have a seperate holder.

The rods have "cracked" caps. They use bolts too.

Looks pretty solid doesn't it? Should be able to hold some serious horsepower.

Yea, Honda switched to a blue colored antifreeze. I think it's still the same stuff.

Looks like it could be opened up quite a bit. What do you want more pics of?

Honda utilized this integrated header design to better the emissions na d lower manufacturing costs, not hinder power or modifications. ULEV is possible because the catalytic converter is heated almost instantly after startup.
