Synthetic Oil
Is it ok to start using synthetic oil eventhough I've always been using regular 5w-30 oil for the past few years?
Are there any problems with seal breakage from switching to synthetic oil?

on my car every oil change i would put one qt of synthetic in and then the next oil change i would put one more etc etc. i did that so my car would get used to the new oil. its been running ever since
Synthetic oil is not what you may thing, it's still regular oil except it's filtered more and they add a few chemicals to it. I always used Honda 5W30 in my b16 but when I switched over to Mobile One synthetic oil and a Purrelator oil filter I could tell a big difference. Switching to synthetic oil won't mess up your engine, and you still have to change your oil every 2500 or so. Some people say you should change it every 7500 miles or whatever but thats false, you can do that with regular oil as long as you do mainly highway driving. So don't believe everything you hear.

Benz uses 0-40 Mobil 1.... with a fleece oil filter you can go 13000 thousand miles.
but we do have sludge problems occasionally. Also most benz's take an large amount of oil except the new 4 cyls.

you seem to be confused, conventional oil is filtered to get certain viscosities and have additives, while synthetic is completely man made, hence the title "synthetic"
And how does synthtic need to be changed every 2500, but convential oil can last 7500?

I think he meant that with both synthetic and regular, you can go up to 7500 miles as long as it's hwy miles.

when I first got my civic it had 67,000 miles and I used castrol gtx 5w30 with purolator pure one filters, did that for 20,000 miles or so then decided to switch to mobil 1 5w30 and I used the same filters, car has 50,000+ miles since using the synthetic and I've had no problems whatsoever from using either one and it has 143,000 now.
Edit:
I change it every 3,000-4,000 miles

If you have the money use 4qts of MOBIL 1 5w30 every 3500 miles.
If you dont have the money use 4qts of any 5w30 every 3500 miles.
Make sure you change your oil every 3500 miles to be on the safe side.

Is this true???
Cause I was only planning to use synthetic during the summer hours...while I can change the oil myself...During the winter I can't change it myself because my place here has no garage and I don't want to pay 50 bucks for an oil change during the winter.

That's what I was told.</TD></TR></TABLE>this is not true at all. And to all of you who think changing oil every 10k is moronic, tell that to the Audi engineers who actually set the oil change recomendation at 10k miles. I'm sure you'll be succesful in showing them that they're morons. No you should not mix ANY oils of any brands of any weights. Each oil distributor comes up with their own "cocktail" and adding another oil can disrupt the harmony of that. It prob won't have any bad effect but is still something to stay away from. Synthetic oil is not just filtered more. It is human engineered oil, it's main advantage over conventional oil is a very consistent molecule size, whereas a conventional oil is not nearly so, think of it as genetic enginering to achieve the perfect subject. Therefore it tears easier and burns easier than synthetics. I have personally gone 30k miles on one oil change on a junk motor and had no problems, and that was with conventional. Also again to those who think you need to change at 3k, the problem isn't the oil, it's the filter. If you change your oil filter every 3k then your oil will likely last 20k miles no problem. Of course that depends on conditions and you should adjust accordingly. How clean your engine burns has a large effect also, so if you have a PIG you should change your oil more often, hot weather more often, cold cold weather more often, city driving, more often, racer, more often. Just use common sense. on a final note. the top 4 synthetics are, last I checked(top 4 as in "best", in no particular order) Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Redline.........have a nice night...............John

Ok fact of the matter is that oil companies make money off of you changing your oil more frequently. So of course they are going to advertise "CHANGE EVERY 3K MILES" I'm pretty sure the honda service schedule is perfectly fine to follow..maybe the severe one if you drive your car hard.
there is no point to synthetic oil unless ur car is a full on race, if u just keep up with oil changes there will be know problems. if u look on the back of the container it say the temp. range yea u never reach that temp so when ur engine burns up and melts u can still use that oil hmmm... i want to spend the extra money on that oil

haha
