Default Stupid question about pistons....

Im about to throw some new pistons in a B16 and was wondering why people would buy used pistons? Dont you have to hone out the cylinder walls and increase the diameter of the piston? Im thinking that if you buy used pistons they might not fit right, new rings or not.

Im confused..Can somebody help me out here?? I'm definately going to buy new pistons (rings), but am I missing something?

Thanks for any info

depends on the condition of your cyl. walls
honing is done to get rid of grooves, marks, etc so that the rings seal.

people do buy slightly used pistons, in order to lower/rise compression, and as said earlier people usually hone cylinders to remove slight imperfections on thier surfaces. Not a big deal as long as you they are not fried or anything like that, just make sure new rings always go in along with the pistons.

Ive used pistons with about 20k miles on them in my LS?VTEC along with new rings. no problems so far.

Honing is done to the cylinder walls to seat the new rings. what it does is "grinds" down the rings to shape, and the rings "grind" down the grooves from the hone. After proper break in of the motor, and as mileage increases on the motor, those grooves start to fade away giving you higher compression.

if the ovaling of the cylinder walls is not excessive in the motor that the pistons came out of and is not severe in the motor that they are going into, than it will work fine.
