Default stripped threads on block

The idiot that had my car before put in wrong tranny bolts or something because the threads on block are stripped and the bolts wont tighten. Where can i take this to have it fixed? can i go to a transmission shop or do i have to take it to a machine shop?

Buy a Heli-Coil Kit and fix it yourself, cost about 30$.....3gdude

You can get them at any good auto parts store. You need to know your thread size though, so take one of the good bolts with you to match up. Its basically a steel coil that you thread into the aluminum, that allows you to restore threads back to original size. It will be stronger than before. Read directions on package...3gdude

so when it rethreads, it doesnt make the bolt size larger, it sorta just fixes the original sized threads?

I used a Helicoil to fix a stripped exhaust manifold bolt. 2 of them actually. It worked rather well. I'd say it's your best bet. Napa can match one up for you. You'll need the right sized drill bit to drill out the hole, the drill size needed is on the helicoil package.

helicoil....but you have to make some kind of super long extension for the thread bit to reach into the block...weve had to do it once in a while

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you about needing the long extention reach the hole.

But I would suggest using "Time-Serts". They are a little more expensive than helicoils. But they are much easier for amaturs to work with.

I used them to repair all three of my Drive-side Engine mount holes in my block. It was really easy (just take your time and be patient). That was about a month and a half ago... no problems so far.

The whole deal cost me about $45. I bought the drill bit too.
