Default Strange problems with my swap

I just finished my b16a swap on my 90 crx si. The car runs great except when you get on the throttle really hard. Driving it normally it goes fine, when i had to get on the throttle to get out of the way of an oncoming car it studdered and kinda skipped....it got going but it wasnt smooth. I barely pulled out.

Another thing it does when i am in high rpm ranges is that it seems to miss even when i am just gradually getting on the gas....anyone ever have that problem?

Not to mention my car seems to backfire a bit....im not sure whats up with this but it does it on a rare occasion.

Also, the tachometer needle seems to almost "dance" when i get to around 4k....anyone know what might be up with my car?

Other than that the car runs great....im running 94 octane in it right now, would that have any affect on its performance? Thanks again. Ryan.

I'd try switching the O2 sensors, the bogging is a common problem with switched O2 sensors.

first off if your tach is dancing then most likely your ignitor is going out...so youre gonna have to take the dist off...open it up and swap ignitors...you can use the one from your d16..or any other odb0 dseries...if you dont feel comfortable opening up your distributor...then you could cut off the leg that hits your vtec solenoid on the d16 dist..and it will work(i just did this a few days ago when my b16 dist bearing went out)

the missing could probly be the dist too..but usually its because people dont use 2 o2 sensors...are you running 1 or 2?

If he was at WOT then the car won't be bogging from O2 sensors. The ECU disregards O2 sensor output under WOT conditions.

are you getting any CEL? Cam timing could be off when it comes to backfiring noise and stuttering

The tach never did this before but when i pulled the engine out the second time to change my clutch it started to do it alot...What gives?

i am currently have this exact same problem with my stock d16. except it starts at 3k rpm but stops after about 15 minutes of driving. i changed my igniter a while ago and it worked for about two weeks. then started up again. i started asking around and my friend at honda said they had the same problem on a civic. they found out that one of the wires from the distributer was messed up. try testing each wire first before blowing 100 on an igniter like i did.

yeh it could be one of the wires attached to the ignitor...when i changed my ignitor the other day...i noticed one of the wires was barely on....so when i put the new one on...i made sure the connections were on really tight..and its workin fine...no tach dancing

how long have you had the swap? just a thought, shouldn't you break it in before you start getting on it??? not being a smart ***...just asking, i mean i know its a used engine, but it probably sat in a cold *** warehouse for a long time.

An ignition timing might be the problem ( backfire tells me that ), try to get yourself a timing gun and check all this.......

This is the second time ive had the engine out of the car.....I put the engine in,drove it for a while, pulled it out again cuz i had a bad clutch...put it back in and now it does this weird ****....It ran just fine before and now it does weird things....when i get into vtec is when it starts to miss and skip and hesitate. Its really weird because sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesnt..... The car used to run good and now it doesnt run so great. Strangely enough it started doing this after i put that dam sunoco 94 in it...hmmmm.

I plan on pulling out that timing light this weekend and putting it on the car...I think it might be a bit off.

And what exactly do i have to do to get to the ignitor?I can get one from a friend thats not a big deal, I just want to know how to get to it and check it out.

And yet again the tach doesnt start doing the dancing and jump till i get into vtec....weird ****.

And to answer the person who asked me if i "broke it in"....yes i did. I even changed the oil after 500 miles just to make sure the old crusty **** was gone. Like i said before it ran really well and now it runs like butt.

PLease help! ~Thanks, Ryan~

the ignitor is right inside your distributor cap. its a little awkward to get to though.

Update: I was driving my car tonight....went over a bunch of bumps and potholes...all of the sudden all of those problems dissappeared......the thing ran amazingly and my tach read accurately and without dancing around....now what do you guys make of that?bad connection? it was like the car came to life in an instant and just started hauling ***....do you make this to be a bad connection or what? What would explain a car running good all of the sudden if it had quite a few little problems with it?

Thanks again. ~Ryan~

its probably one of the wires on your ignitor...there are 4 of them...one of mine was REALLY loose...so i had to kinda flatten the connector out to tighten it up...you'll see what im talking about if you take it apart...its a little card with 4 wires connected to it..you cant miss it...make sure all the wires are on tight

if you need help with the dist check out this site...go to the electrical section..then ignition...
