Default Stock Intake on Civics

I have a 1990 Honda Civic and was wondering some things about the first intake tube that starts just above the radiator/exhaust manifold and goes down into the bottom front of the airbox on the passenger side of the car...First of all, why did Honda put this tube in front of the radiator/exhaust manifold...This is a VERY hot place if not the hottest place on the car, and I would think you would get less dense oxygen there for power purposes...I am assuming they positioned the tube up high for anti water intake but they could have just had a small riser tube going high up next to the air box where cold air comes in...Secondly, is this tube tuned to give low end torque to the engine? Not that there is much of course but would removing this take a bit of lower end away providing you would gain some cold air down by the box?

Just a not to you if you decide to remove your resonator, it's not just the little horn and tube that runs down behind the radiator, but also a big milk jug sized chamber hidden behind your bumper. I took all of that off, you still dont have to worry about picking up water because it just leaves the bottom of your airbox open, while infront of your wheel well isn't an ideal place to be taking up air, it cant be any worse than behind the radiator, like you say. I'ld immagine that the air would flow eaiser as well because you're cutting out 3 or so 90 degree bends in the piping and two chambers. I have no facts to back any of this up, just my own reasoning *shrug*
