Default Steering Jumps

i did an engine swap on my civic 2000 hatch a while ago on my car and the steering was always alright. When I did it I removed the powersteering (wish I hadn't). Now after about 4 years of everything being alright my steering wheel seems to jump especially at a dead stop and now when the wheels face forward the steering wheel points to the right instead of where it should be on straightened wheels. It does a terrible clank sound and sounds like metal grinding a bit. Anyone have an idea of what it could be?? Could it be the power steering rack??
