Starting engine without trans fluid.
Is it a bad idea? I know the mainshaft will spin, but as long as no gears are meshing, should be alright, right?
I'm just ready to start the h22, but axles are a week and a half out. Figured I could get all my trouble shooting done by the time the axles arrive.
Also, the engine has sat for probably the better part of a year. Do I need to do anything special as far as a pre-lube is concerned on initial startup?
Thanks

ha ha, after my fifth engine swap, i thought i knew it all...
but i forgot to refill the tranny, drove 1.6 miles before the high whining noise appeared and i remembered!!!
so i reckon it is OK to start the engine without tranny oil, just dont put it in gear...
as for pre-lube just run it on hte sttarter for about 40 seconds to put oil through hte engine...
t..
PS hope it starts well for you

well, if you see it as a minimal risk, then why not put some tranny fluid in there?
fill it till it starts to come out hte axle holes and you know that tranny oil is circulating inside...
i still think the risk is minimal, most (all?) the tranny bearings are ball bearings arent they?

I thought the tranny doesnt spin at all if it's in neutral?, the mainshaft shouldnt be spinning.
I had a crx sit for over a year and all I did was a regular oil change, took the valve cover off and poured oil all over the head. It seems to be fine as far as i can tell. If you want to go for extra measure, you could use some assembly lube and put that all over the cams and rocker arms etc.

all the parts in the tranny spin. the gears are in constant mesh all the time except reverse. if the imput shaft is turning all the gears will be turning with it. the only shaft that doesnt move it the output shaft.

Y'know what. I think some higher power is telling me not to start it before the axles come. I tried it, and either it's a bad starter, or something else. I thought maybe no juice, but I read a solid 12.8v at the battery. Guess I'll double check wiring (there's no way the ground is bad). Anything else aside from dead starter/battery that'll give you the "click" or keep it from turning over at all?
i agree with chevy. the whole cluster shaft will be spinning with the input shaft, and freewheeling the speed gears, obviously without load
why dont you just keep the clutch disengaged

I had thought of that. But Chevy is right. I don't need to get all overly excited and start my car just because it hasn't had a running engine in almost a year. It's better off to wait anyway. Besides, I CAN'T start it! Somethings up with the starter!
try a fresh battery, particulary if it has been sitting there a while...
if it clicks that usually means it (the starter) is trying but hasnt got enough juice...
i hope it is that simple

The battery is brand new. Odyssey 680 (whatever it is). I know there supposed to come with a full charge, but might not. Well I stuck it on the charger for a bit, and then metered it at a good 12.8. But still no luck. Just the click. I'll try tapping the starter with a mallet.
