Default The Stages Of Clutch Deterioration

Could somebody fill me in on how to tell how worn my clutch is? I've been told that I need a new clutch, and so I have one on the way. But tonight I turned the car on, and the clutch pedal felt like what I would image it would feel like if my clutch was "worn down to the bolts" (I... can't really describe what it felt like??). I think I heard somebody say that (clutches can wear down to bolts)... but I'm not really sure how clutches are constructed, what happens when they are this worn and that worn, etc. Could somebody please fill me in?

Thanks,
Ben

What they're referring to is that the clutch disk material has worn down to/past the rivets, meaning there is nothing left to grip the pressure plate and flywheel surfaces. You'll know your clutch is bad when you hit the gas and the RPM's increase but your car doesn't accelerate.
