Default Sppedometer/Transmission Help

I've been a member here a bit, but just like to read. I posted a couple threads about my car, but they were deleted. Oh well. So now I've got something I need help with.

I've got a 93 Accord LX that I had converted to a 5-Speed w/ a 96 Prelude Tranny. Apparently, the syncrho is going dead on third gear. I'm gonna avoid shifting into third till I can address the issue. I got quoted down at Certified Transmission at 2100 for a new Prelude tranny, and 1400 for a new Accord tranny.

I'm not going to get a tranny from them, but I was wondering if I could just replace the synchros, or rebuild it myself from a kit. I've never busted open a tranny before, so I don't want to get in too deep. If it comes down to getting a rebuilt tranny, is it there a big difference between the Accord and Prelude transmission? The guy who did the work said it's an awesome difference, but I don't want to spend a grand on his opinion.

Plus after the 5-speed swap, my speedometer stopped functioning. I got a 5-speed cluster, but still no luck. I'm getting a check engine light for what I think is the speedometer, but I haven't had the code checked yet. What should be the course of action for that?
