spark plug ground trouble
I'm road racing with my civic and some times I expect some spark plug trouble.
My engine is a prep Ls-vtec, I mean, rod, piston, cam, valvetrain are all after market. the head and intake are ported and matched with a 68mm throttle body. with an 4-1 headers
using a double row integra radiator... twice large as the civic is. I have a spoon fan switch and thermostat.
the car have been dyno tuned properlly using a p28 ecu with ectune by the top guy over here !! the air fuel ratio target is 12.8:1, with 340cc injectors and 255lph walbro pump in the stock fuel tank. tuned on 94 octane pump gaz.
I do sprint race of 30 minutes, called gt-sprint
During the saturday my engine was running perfectly, I qualified first and dunring the race I was running very well, escaping from the rest of the group, suddently, after 22 minutes my engine had some misfire on different load and I lost some engine power. I finished the race in second place. after the race I removed my plugs and I found 2 of them with no more ground tips. the outside temperature was pretty hot, around 100f.
On sunday we had a second race, I switched to my second mapping, wich is 10% more rich, beleiving it will cool down a little bit more the combustion chamber... cause the outside temperature was still 100F.
during the sunday race, I started 3rd, driving in front again and escaping front everybody and after the same delay ... around 20 minutes ... the same thing appened ... I lost my first position and I finished second again.... after the race I removed my plug and I found 2 of them with out the ground tips ... (not the same cylinder)
I'm actually running with NGK BKR7E ... based on the colors ... I beleived the air fuel ratio is good... maybe the plug is a little bit too hot for my engine ... At the auto parts they told me they can't have some bkr8e... I can't see important mark of pinging ... but the ground tips is not melted is just broke like glass could do
That situation appened only during races, wheres I push my car to the limit... I'm not sure, but I guess the plug fail after a long right turn where I have to stay in 3rd gear at 7800-8000 rpm for a long time ... I never had that situation during normal lapping day, where I don't drive on the edge like a race.
did any body have a NGK part number that could fit a ls vtec with a plug temperature of 8
I would like to stay with non iridium plug because I change them before each races... and I'm ok with NGK and Denso ... but I don't wan't any bosh, champion plugs ... never !!
I read many post on Honda tech and in many topics I can read non resistive spark plug have bean used... is that correct to run those kind of plug using a stock distributor ...
here are some pics of my plug after a 30 minutes race ... if you have any idea ... I'm open to suggestion !!
i don't want to loose a first position again for a spark plug issue ...
