Default spark plug gap?

Is there any benefit from gapping a sparkplug .02, or .04 larger than what is recommended? or is it actually worse for the car? Just wondering, because some of the other guys I know gap their plugs to .50, and their cars seem to run well.

You'll get a slightly fatter spark. Good for combustion. Might put a strain on a marginal coil.
