SOHC Vtec Experts HELP ME!!!
I have mini-me motor in my 96 hatchback. d16y7 block, d16z6 head, d16y8 IM, and a 97 EX ecu. I just got the ECU and plugged it in. Now I am having some trouble, its throwing codes 23, 41, and 17. I am having a pretty heavy hesitation in the 1500-4000 rpm range. After 4500 its fine and the Vtec is engaging. I have an Apex'i V-AFC installed.
Please Help me...

code 23 = knock sensor (KS)
code 41 = 02 sensor
code 17 = VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
Do you have all of these items wired in?
One problem you'll surely have is the Knock Sensor. The 7Y block doesn't have one, only the EX Y8 block does. So you'll need to figure something out with that.
As for VTEC you need to wire it in straight to the ecu if you're reusing your Y7 engine harness. Using an EX engine harness would save you from wiring numerous things (IACV, VTEC, & KS if you had one).
The VSS should plug right into your Y7 engine harness though...all 92-00 civics have a VSS and they're pretty much all the same.
The only option for you regarding the KS is to go the OBD1 route (jumper harness & P28 ecu).

Were you using another ECU previous to this one which was not giving you error codes?
Code 23 [Knock Sensor] = Your Y7 did not have one, the Y8 ECU is looking for one. You need to add the sensor and wire it up.
Code 41 [Primary O2 heater] = Measure the resistance of the O2 heater section with the O2 sensor disconnected from the main engine harness: It should measure 15-40ohms. If this is good, then check your wiring for opens/shorts or the internal circuitry of the ECU (the heater portion) is toast.
Code 17 [Vehicle Speed Sensor] = ???
One common link between the VSS & O2 heater is that they are powered off of the "Alternator SP, fuse 15". However, this fuse also provides power to the voltage regulator of the alternator, 2nd O2 heater, EVAP purge control solenoid.
Do you have a multi-meter to do some resistance/voltage checks?

I was previously using a 98 HX ecu. The Vtec still worked because of the modified signal from the V-AFC. Still threw the vss and o2 codes, and it would sometimes die at a stop, low idle that sort of thing.

Check to see if the vss is plugged in. If it is, check to see if you pinched a wire.

did your car have a 2 wire or 3 wire IAC valve? some of the problem could be related to the IAC wiring, I had that problem with my car and u have to repin some wires, and are u using 2 o2 sencors, if u have the o2 plugged into the secondary plug it will give you the code 41, try the other o2 plug
I am re-using the HX harness that has all the wiring for Vtec, the harness is fine and un-modified except for the afc wiring.
5 wire......... i think thats why u have the code 41..... did u get nething else cleared up yet... a ex ecu doesnt support 5 wire. what happens if u plug the hx computer back in to the car? codes?
I got it, had to wire up a 4 wire o2 from an EX. Three of the four wires were in the plug, but I had to wire the fourth to a switched power for the heater portion of the o2 sensor. I still have a CEL but it is for the knock sensor and VSS. The hesitation is gone though so i'm happy for now.
Thanks for all of your help guys, great forum.
