First let me get out the inevitable v-tech/VTEC thing. First, you'll need the motor obviously, you could use your tranny, you'll need an OBD II to OBD I conversion harness, an ECU (P28), and you'll have to wire in the VTEC solenoid. Other than that, it's very near plug and play. If you check the Civic or Hybrid forum, one of them will probably have extensive write-ups on doing this swap.

Better? Performance wise, yes. Shorter gearing is gonna give you better acceleration. And it's VTEC.

You will have to do some wiring work to your CX engine harness in order for the OBD1 conversion to work properly.

Here's what you will need to do:
  • 3 to 2-wire IACV mod, see my diagram here:
    http://ff-squad.com/tech/wiring/wiring.96-98.jpg
    and
    http://ff-squad.com/tech/wiring/wiring.96-98_a-plug.jpg
  • See if your CX dizzy will work on the D16Z6 (92-95 SOHC VTEC) engine, or convert your OBD2 dizzy plug to OBD1 spec or buy a Rywire OBD2 to OBD1 dizzy jumper in order to use the OBD1 distributor.
  • reuse your CX alternator so you don't have to change the alternator plug to an OBD1 alt. plug
  • Add wiring for VTEC Pressure Switch and VTEC solenoid (see first diagram link above)
  • Perform the OBD2 injector clip mod so you can use OBD1 injectors and not have to cut and splice OBD1 injector clips to your CX harness:
    http://ff-squad.com/tech/wiring/obd2-1injclip.jpg
  • You might need to change your OBD2 IAT plug over to an OBD1 IAT plug, depending on what intake system you use.

ok good.
then disregard wiring in VTEC and the IACV mod.
Everything else in the list above is still required.
If you decide not to convert to OBD1 and use an OBD2 EX ecu to power the engine you will need to perform the CKF trick and wire in the 2nd 02 sensor manually as EX harnesses do not have integrated 2nd 02 sensor wiring like your CX harness does.
