Default SOHC TIMING: Dropping Head Onto Block -> Initial Timing. HELP D16A6

Hey guys again

Ive got the deck of my block prepped now and today or tomorrow Im going to install my head. Now this is the part I know Im going to have trouble with so let me explain everything I see.

I know I need to have both top and bottom of the engine on the same stage of the combustion cycle, thats what I think I need help with

Id like to know where my head has to be and where my block has to be. I dont know if you can turn the head easily but if someone could tell me how Id apprecaite it.

I pretty much need help with everything from setting up the position of the block and head -> having the timing belt fully installed.
Some things on the side of my block are loose (assuming timing belt tensioner) and on the crank

Ive never attempted to set the timing on a Honda before so any help will be greatly appreciated.

A few things to take into consideration:
-Im new to building engines
-engine is a d16a6
-head is milled .040

Rotate the crank so the timing mark is pointing sorta towards 3-o'clock. All 4 pistons will be at mid-stroke. Exact position isn't critical.

Install the head. Since all the pistons are at mid-stroke it doesn't matter where the camshaft is. In fact you can spin the camshaft all you want.

Install waterpump, tensioner pulley, whatever you need...

Spin camshaft to line up the timing marks correctly for #1 TDC.

Turn crankshaft counterclockwise, directly to TDC. If you go beyond, go back. Don't turn thru another revolution.

Install belt & set tensioner...

What are you lost on? Did my message make sense, to get the head installed? Or are you asking about other stuff? Maybe a more specific question? Where are you in the assembly process?

It's hard for anyone on a board like this to be a complete substitute for a repair manual.

This is the truth, which is why people dickin' with their Hondas should have a Helms manual in their toolbox.

I believe rule-of-thumb for Honda engines is that .012" = 1* retard, meaning that for every .012" of material removed, the timing becomes 1* more retarded. You will need a cam gear in order to advance the cam about 3* to compensate for your milled head.

As for lining things up, there should be a mark on the crank sprocket (what drives the timing belt) that lines up with an arrow on the block/oil pump. When aligned, this means that #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke.

As for cams with stock cam gear(s), again, there are marks that when lined up indicate #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke. On my Y7, the cam gear has an 'UP' marking as well as two notches that are 90* to either side of the 'UP' marking. When those two nothces are aligned with the top of the block deck, piston #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke.
