sohc final drive clearance issues

sohc final drive clearance issues
I just went to install my 4.9 final drive in my S20 tranny and it is rubbing on the tranny housing. Do these normally need to be machined down to fit the 4.9?
Also, do the s20 and s40 trannies have the same differential.
