SoCal Shop
I am purchasing a semi built motor, Im looking for a socal shop to make sure the port and polish job on it is adequte and to assemble the block, fully balanced.
basically looking for a good engine/machining shop in SOCAL would like one with a reputation.

Make sure to pick a shop that has the ability to do what you are asking. If you want then to doulbe check what you are buying they will need to replace parts if they "really" tare it down, head gasket etc. Make sure that they will take the time to go there the whole motor and really give you advice. This might cost you some $ to do it but can save you alot of both time and money in the end. Make sure to look into the shop before you drop off a 3-4 thousand dollar built motor.
Just a thought.

thats the entire reason why I created this post. I dont mind the $ I just need to make sure they are fairly familiar with Honda Engines and that they do and can recognize quality work. The block pistons rods and haed are all apart. so the motor is tore down. I want it balanced and assembled back together as well as checking everything making sure i get what i pay for.
jay at one honda specialist does that all day, everyday. all he pretty much does is put motors together with everything balanced. the machine shop he goes to is reputable and does excellent work.

I own a shop but I also am a consumer so when I wanted to have some stuff done on my house this is how I picked the company -
1 - called for "quotes", this helped see who was hungry for the business who came out when they said they would meant they would complete the job when they said they would.
2 - asked to see other houses they had done similar work on.
3 - went by the shop to see the office and the set up, did they answer the phone all the time did they act the same on the phone as they did in person
4 - made sure I didn't have to pay until the job was complete.
5 - if they were contracting outside labor was I told
6 - did they have insurance, permits, lis to do the work. what if they did something to my house would they pay for it.
This is what you should do - does the shop answer its phone during their regular business hours ? Do they have permits to do the work ? Is it a company or a bunch of hommies hangin out i.e. uniforms / t-shirts ? Are their references from customer or friends that get work done there or both ? So Cal only has a few shops worth your time - alphabetical order so its fair to all

agreed there are only a few shops in socal that are qualified for your type of project. just remember to do your research on their "previous " buisnesses as well. thanx jason ..well put!!
RAGE PERFORMANCE!!! hahaha, my buddy works there?? still i think, not sure......but he has b20 hatch, that thing is aWESOME. also, inlinefour isnt bad, but never went there before for any type of motor work.
NO NO NO,
THANK YOU!
I love the responses I got , especially from the guys at the shops. hookups and rage. I of course consider this part of my research, finding people that vouch for shops.
this will definitly(SP) help with my goals, every shop who posted expect a call.
I hope this type of post helps everyone not just me.

I agree with Rage and HookUps. Look for a place that has a good track record of Cars and Engines that they have built. The above mentioned shops have been around and know what theyre doing.
Be careful of "new" shops that offer lower prices just to beat the other shops.
One thing we never really do is Price match or Beat out other shop's prices. There's No way you can discount experience and knowledge of building a race engine.
