sleeved b18a bore question
i picked up a used b18a block for $50 that had aftermarket sleeves and a "solid deck"...its bored to 81.5-82mm(my caliper is a little off)..i do not know what brand the sleeves are but it looks like a custom block gaurd was welded in because the water holes were made with a drill bit...the sleeves are approx. 89mm total diameter...heres my problem...theres 4 vertical 1 inch long gouges in the #2 sleeve about half way down and about .5mm-1mm depth...2 on each side of the sleeve...i was told that someone installed the locks for the wrist pin wrong and thats where the notches came from...im going to be using the block for all motor purposes so i want an 85mm bore which would take care of the notches in the sleeve but im not sure if i can bore out the sleeve that much...there looks to be enough space...and they have about the same specs as darton replacement sleeves...ill post pics if i can....lemme know what you think..thanx
As long as the sleeves butt together the sleeves would allow for an 85mm bore, pending 1 very important thing....the profile of the sleeve below the deck. Darton used a groove in the flats on their newer sleeves (bad idea in my opinion, but anyways). The purpose of this must've been for coolant but it also lowered the wall thickness resulting in a sleeve that couldn't be bored as large. More than likely the sleeves go straight down, but I don't know anything about the sleeves you have so I couldn't really tell you. If they're staight then 85mm is not a problem.
yea,it came with a good LS crank too...the guy was closing his shop down and we went rummaging through all his stuff and bought another complete LS motor for $100 and a good jdm b16a block with crank for $100 and a few other things so he let the sleeved block go for cheap....any other input??

If its sleeved, then it should be ok to bore since the aftermarket sleeves are usually a lot thicker than stock.
But then you say it has a block guard welded into place? If someone sleeved their block i dont think they would put a block guard in there...
Anyways if the sleeves are like darton as you say its ok.But if its stock with a block guard then no
