Default Should it go on smoothly or should i use a hammer??

Just got done putting my GSR gears in my ls tranny and side of the tranny case wont slip on nicely? I know about the tag on the mainshaft below the bearing and its lined up. I can get it to about a half inch and then its doesnt wanna go anymore. i started to tap it with a hammer and then decided to see if you guys know. I have a helm's manual and i am doing everything right so far, but it just seems to stick. I know about the snap ring too, but it doesnt get to the point where i have to open it yet?
Any suggestions
THanks
Burke

try moving the shifter w/ a screwdriver in the pin hole when assembling the two halves.
