Shift Rod removal. need help
I'm attempting to remove the shift rod out of my j1 tranny. I notice a small roll pin under a c-clip which keeps the shift rod in place. I tried using a bolt that was same size as the pin and hammer but it wouldn't even budge. It is kind of hard for me to get any leverage since I'm under the car also. WOuld it be possible for me to disassemble the shift rod from the shifter and then pull the whole thing out or would that require additonal steps? ANy insight is appreciated.

you need a punch or you can use one of the AC compressor bolts.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Taht is what we used for years at the shop - the small point on the end of the bolt helps to align it. And the size goes thru the hole perfect, we have recently changed to an air hammer and that is the best tool ever

Well could i just remove the shaft itself by detatching the rod from the shifter under the car? Will it slide out or no?

The shift rod won't come out of the transmission without opening it up and taking the selector mechanism apart. Your best bet is to get the pin out.
Try raising the car up higher on stands to get some swinging room, use the right punch, and a heavy hammer. Soak it with PB Blaster or similar first.

I use a rolled pin punch. It's got a little **** on the end that centers into the pin. $20 from Sears for a set.
