shift linkage bushing issues
ever since i bought my 91 teg, shifting has been a little clunky - i almost have to "wiggle" the shifter to go into first or third. this weekend i had her up on jacks to change the oil, and since i'd ruled out the transmission (i know the oil had just been changed, and i've never heard of a honda gearbox going south at 115k with the original clutch still intact) i thought i would take a look at the shift linkage.
turns out that the rubber boot thing had come loose on the transmission side of the linkage, allowing the grease to leak out and all types of nasty road stuff to work its way in. since i have work in the morning and need the car back on the road, i just sprayed the hell out of it with some silicone lubricant and put the boot back on.
when i started it up and took it around the block, there was a noticeable improvement in shifting smoothness. it looks like i may need to replace the bushing. has anyone done this before? any advice? i've never done any sort of work on a shift linkage or bushing in the past.
also, my helms manual says that for shift lever pivots the correct lubricant is silicone grease with "molybdenum disulfide"...what on earth is that, and what are the consequences of just using silicone grease?
thanks for any and all help.
