Default Setting the timing without removing the pulley

If the timing is off a few degrees and i need to reset the timing, can i line the crank pulley white mark up with the pointer on the plastic cover or do i have to take the crank pulley off and align the timing marks on the timing belt pulley with the mark on the block.

no need to take the pulley off. just align the mark on the pulley to the cover and be sure the gears are aligned as well.

I've found the pullley and timing belt cover marks to be dead on. The only error you'll find is in how much care you take in lining up the marks and your POV.
