My engine came without a lower timing belt cover. I've been looking (the pistons seem to be as close to tdc as they could be. I looked on the timing belt crank sprocket and it has a little notch in it too and this notch is lined up with an arrow on the oil pump. Is that another way to line up to TDC without using the crank pulley and lower timing belt cover?
if its a dual cam motor there should be a pointer on the flywheel side of the block pointing to the TDC mark on the flywheel. oh, is it a dot on your crank sprocket? that dot is supposed to line up with the arrow on your oil pump, yes.

Nah, it's not a dot, there's actually a grove on one of the teeth, but only one, and it looks purposeful (because it's not in a place that would mess up the timing belt)
