no, you'd have to bring the motor to them (The police station, actually) to verify the number. And if it IS a stolen engine, they will confiscate it from you right then and there.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You can call them, at least in CA you can. The Serial number they will need will be B18C5712345
Just like you said.

Wow old thread.
For clarification, you can call the CHP auto theft division office in Oakland CA with the engine serial # and they can track it to see if there are any 'events' recorded against that block.
That's how you/they find out if it is stolen or not.
No I don't have the phone #, sorry.

I know block serial #'s the first # is the series, the 2nd # is usually what year it was in production, in some cases
For instance, the B16 block.
10XXXXX was made in 89
11XXXXX was made in 90
12XXXXX was made in 91
13XXXXX was made in 92
14XXXXX was made in 93
Tho that isnt always the case, ive seen 14's made in 92 etc..
same thing with 5 series block which went into civc
Also, my friends type R is # 365
his block # is 364 (because they start with block 0000
a good way to check to see if is the original motor

i thought the first number was the the generation it was from
for example a b18c1 block number : 1xxxxxx is first generation meaning its from a 94.
this is why if you buy a shortblock from the dealer it starts with 0

Unless this was just an example of course....
