Default sensore on d16 head under the distributor???

Ok I have noticed that all D16 heads have this sensor it is located under the distributor and has 2 wires going to it a red with white stripe and a green with white stripe and it is a 19mm. What is the name of that sensor and does it control the cooling fan. I tested my fan and it still works. Thanks for any input guys.

Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) sensor for the ECU, not for the fan switch.
