Default safe to use used cams

i have heard from older people, in there 40's and 50's, who r mechanics, that i shouldnt get sued cams. they say the stock cams sit in a groove, and when i get diff cams it wont sit right, this causes premature wear to the head, any help is appreiceiatted

the reason is i can get a good deal on type s cams for my 11:5:1 comp h22, but hey got 50k on them, let me know

look at them, and if they look good, use them. And if you are **** retentive you can get the head line honed

You won't need to have your head line bored for "used" cams. TONS of people buy used cams.

i'm running crower 63402's... bought them used, and haven't had a problem with them... i would suggest that there isn't any major real problems. people buy used cams all the time.

Its okay to use them as long as they are with in spec, you might have to measure the lobes to see if they have lost allot of lift or duration, but i highly dought it !! check for any groves, markings, nicks etc.......other than that the cam is prolly fine !

How would you plasti-gauge the lobes? I've heard that about cams before, but I believe it only applies to old school hydraulic lifter motors. I would like to hear if anyone's purchased a bad set of used cams...haven't heard of a problem yet.

of course you cant plastigauge the lobes, you platigauge the cam/caps. the lobes you can measure.

Just check the lobes for grooves or gouges. I don't think you'll have to measure the lobes.

Yep; if you're a bit overprotective of your baby then you can whip out a dial and measure the lobes and platigage the caps, but I would just give them a visual inspection and be done with it.

Just looks for nicks and deeper scratches on any important surfaces, and check to make sure there isn't a worn flat spot on the apex of the cam lobes......
