is it safe to drive with out thermostate?
I'm wondering what will happen if i drive without a thermostate. I want my temp to be lower when I'm at the track but i don't want to get a mugen theromo.
will the car run ok?

The engine should operate in the temperature range it was designed for. Why would you run without a thermostat? The ECU will see the engine as cold and not run as efficiently. Yes, cold conditions call for a richer mixture, but this may not always be a good thing. The timing may be affected until warm up, I'm guessing. Probably a few other things I can't think of yet. I don't know, Im just making an educated guess here, but for daily driving, no t-stat is undesireable.
all i did with my stock thermostat was drilled 5 or 6 tiny tiny tiny little holes in it so some water would always get through and that worked great it just takes little bit longer to warm up in the morning. it prolly takes likr 10 minutes or soo.
You can usually get away with it for a short time, but I wouldn't run without a thermo indefinately. It is there for a reason. Don't doubt the big H guys in lab coats!
Man, I have a spare 160 degree thermostat... from what I know, all D and B series thermos are the same... maybe H-series as well, but not sure. Whoever's interested, shoot me a message... $15 shipped?

I had a broken thermostate in my accord for a few months. It sucked, no heat.
your car will idel higher if it is cold witch will bring your gas milage down. When I fixed it it seemed a little slower (could just be in my head) so I got aem cia and that seemed to bring all the power plus a little more back (but then agian that too could be in my head)
My god, put a thermostat in your vehicle. Don't treat the engine like crap b/c you think you'll gain .01 on your timeslip. If you want to improve performance, learn to drive.
safe... sure.... in the winter.. youll have no heat.. in the summer... it acutally prevents overheating.. happened to me cus the car kept on overheating. so i yanked it out... and forgot to put it back in, during the winter.. so i froze.

did you have any issues at all when you did that?
Check this out.......if you run with no thermostate the water will run though the engine non-stop. You do not want that because when it passes threw the radiator it will not get cooled down.....so its kinda pointless
The coolant has to have time to be able to absorb the engine heat, thus running with no thermostat might indicate a cooler water temp, but the engine will be hot.
Its there for a reason....so put one in.

WTF the radiator has plently of area space to cool down the water before it re-enters the sleeve jackets.

woah didn;t know that much about characteritics of water.
Thanks bro.
so what would you do if you wanted to motor to run cooler in the summer temp? My accord runs hottter than most because if a head swap i did to ^ the compression. In the winter the needle is almost touching the half way mark, I'm afraid it will really over-heat in the summer ; come temperture of 90F

If you think the car might run hotter than normal, then you might want to use less 'antifreeze' and more water in the radiator with a stock thermostat. 'Antifreeze' does help to raise the boiling point of the cooling system and provide some corrosion resistance, but it lowers the overall amount of heat that water can absorb from the engine.
Hey i'll try that out. currently my mixture is about 70 coolant and 30 water.
is that okay?
is it okay to run all coolant an no water?
sorry for the newbie questions but this is somthing i never ran into.

Water Wetter from Redline will also help out in your quest for cooler temps.

Get a higher pressure radiator cap, this will raise the boiling point.
Also, 70 to 30 is about the max you want to go, just don't go lower than 44 percent coolant- this is when engine parts may be eroded by cavitation and cooling system components can be severely damaged by corosion.

Yes, the thermostat is the same part number for D-series, B-series, and F-series... I just checked. I'm assuming this is for an Accord?
I'm glad I found this topic. Anyways does all B series share the same temp thermostat(160 degrees)? Also, can you buy different temperature thermostat from auto stores? The reason for my asking is becuase I have a 95 integra ls that I have own for 5 years, and within those 5 years I've had 3 blown radiators. My temperature needle is sitting just about in the middle and I can't get it to lower down.I can't figure out what the problem(s) is. I've changed the thermostat for every time that I had to replace my radiators. I'm thinking that maybe when I bought the thermostat the store probably gave me one that had a higher temparture reading instead of the original temp so causing my water/coolant to flow less frequently making my engine hotter then it should be? What do you guys think?
