I noticed that my car was a little sluggish, and I would recommend getting your car running right, b/c not only will the cat get f'd up, but the o2 sensor as well.
I heard one time that running rich lost a little power because it was like "putting out a fire with gas" It might seem like it would help, but really it wasnt at the best ratio to all burn off completely, so it doesn't give anything more, excpet maybe it cools it a little, but i still think i lost power when my o2 sensor went bye bye and I was running really rich b/c of a CEL.

Running too rich can also cause you to wash out your cylinders and not provide adequate lubrication as well as break down oil viscosity.
