Default rings install/prep

rebuilding b18c block light hone on the cylinder walls
plan on using new typ-r pistons/rings oem standard size

im following helms, reading up on the piston ring section
measuring endgaps/ring to groove clearance/ring alignment
i understand the helms info, but is that all thier is to rings when installing them?

im thinking do what helms say and thats it
or is thier any more prep work, for example ive heard of filefitting, not exactly sure what that is(anybody know), or even if new honda rings would need that?

feedback welcome
thanx

Honda rings don't generally require filefitting. JE piston rings do; it involves installing the rings in the bore, measuring the ring gap, and using a ring filer to remove material until the ring gap is at spec. Manly makes a nice little ring filing tool, which is basically a little diamond cutting wheel.

None of my OEM rings required end gap adjustments and the ring-to-land clearances on OEM pistons was dead on. It's always good to check, but I doubt you'll need to make any changes.

Your final concern is installing the rings so that the end gaps (a) don't fall on thrust surfaces and (b) are properly staggered. The Helms will show you where the gap should be for each ring.
