Ridge formation at the top of the cylinder
Since im pretty much a engine rebuild newbie I have a question about the ridge formation at the top of the cylinder wall. I am getting some head work done and it is currently at the machine shop getting pressure checked, new valve seals, 3 angle valve job, and blah blah blah. But my qustion is would it be ok if I slapped on the head on my existing block even if there is a ridge formed at the top of the cylinders? I am not taking out the pistons out or doing anything to the block. I understand that if i remove that ridge it may be possible that i wont get a correct seal with my existing piston rings in there.
BTW: Its a B18C1 and has 75k on the block. I will post pictures when I get a chance to take them.

you can leave it......nothing bad will happen if you leave it or remove it but you need to be careful when cleaning the ridge of carbon that you don't damage the cylinder walls.
i would just leave it.....you wont gain anything by removing it.

I rebuilt an engine and left the ridge and everything was fine. As long as you don't change anything to make the piston reach higher in the chamber than the piston that made the ridge. This would damage the rings quickly.

Given the above statement, you cannot remove the ridge, nor would you want to. Anything you would do would not increase performance (as the upper ring stops below the ridge) and would only contaminate the bore with either metal chards, or carbide grit. All bad for the life of the existing ring/cylinder.
If you have a dial bore gauge it would be interersting to see how much the bore wore, and how many miles are on the block.
If you are working the head alone, let the bores be. You will be OK. Good luck with your rebuild.
