Reversing the polarity on a battery
Looking to buy a civic that has electircal problems. The current owner says the electrical problem is this: He charged the battery and in doing so hooked up the charger to the battery backwards (pos. to neg and neg. to pos.) He says by doing that he reversed the polarity on the battery and the pos. and neg. were now switched. Not knowing he had done that he hooked it back up to the car, tried starting it and messed something up. So basicly, it's as though the battery was hooked up backwards.
I was wanting to know if this is possible and if so, is there enough fuses and/or fail safes on a '93 civic to prevent that from damaging something major?
In my messing with batterys, I would have thought the second he hooked up the batt. sparks would be flying......what do ya'll think?
i did it once on my escort, and as soon as i tried to start the car. i saw smoke coming from the alternator. although the alternator didn't go bad, the starter did, it got fried.
