Well, I still can't get reverse (a hydro GSR tranny). I can remove the selector and shift the fork into reverse by hand fine, but if I put the selector on and try to shift it with the casing off, everything is moving around too much. If I put the casing on, it will go into every gear but reverse. It feels like something is obstructing the 5th/rev fork from going up into revese. It feels like something is inbetween the casing and the top of the 5th/rev shift fork keeping it from going up... but the casing does not have any restrictions I can see. Can anysone see a problem here?
Part of the selector is removed in these pics... as it sits now, I can shift the fork into reverse by hand fine.
Sorry about the big pics... but I thought detail would be useful
help!

HOLY **** that was the EXACT SAME PROBLEM i had with my b16 transmission, we could get it to engage by hand moving the idler gear but NOT by the selector. nothing else was wrong with the tranny.
unforutionatley i have bad news, i had to wind up replacing the entire transmission. (well steve@hondamotors gave me a new one, he rules)
it feels like there is a physical block when trying to go into reverse? when you let off the clutch can you hear the idler gear skipping off reverse? if so, that was my EXACT problem.

yep... feels like there is a physical block. Did you ever figure out what it was, or did you just get a new one?
The reverse gear is on right (I thought that too, but I checked the helms. Also, it will drop into place and lock the reverse gears together fine)
I've got a spare GSR tranny... I was thinking of trying the casing and/or the shift forks or selector... I'm shooting in the dark here. Any thoughts?

BTW, it looks like you did not get the good pics that you were shooting for.

Yeah.. I've got an old digicam... and it doesn't do that well close-up.
Hopefully I'll be able to tell by inspection.
The thing is, the tranny worked great a week ago on my friends car. He dropped it, shipped it to me, and now I have this problem. He never had any reverse problems.

did you try turning the input shaft a little bit while trying to get it into R?

everything even matched up with my helms. forutionatley steve over at hmotors online got wind of my problem, and gave me a new transmission. so i never had to worry about it more.
i would try replacing the reverse idler gear and the fork that moves it up and down.
