Reverse gear won't engage. HELP!!
My friends 99 Integra 5 spd won't engage into reverse. every other gear works fine but tried going from 1st to reverse 5th to reverse it just won't pop into gear. Any chance the shift fork is bent or broken or could it be something else? any info is appreciated.
thanks.
thanks.
replace the transmission fluid with honda MTF.
does it go into reverse with the car off?
if the MTF dosent help and it wont engage reverse in any way shape or form you are gonna have to crack open the transmission and have a look.

Ya it doesn't matter if the car is on or off it won't engage. He had replaced the tranny fluid before but he has stored his car for about 6 months for winter so would that have any effect?? shouldn't. He did put honda MTF too. Thanks
Oh really?? that was my first impression too. Now will you be able to see it if you through the engine bay looking down at the tranny or do you gotta take everything out??
Also what would have cause it?? He wasn't abusing it or anything/
Thanks alot

no you have to open the transmission to inspect the fork
and who knows, could be anything that caused it.
definatley take it to a mechanic for a second opinion. but im probably right.

oh really cool i'll tell my friend that. Have you ever heard of this problem before. I know in my Prelude (1999) there is always a 5th gear grinding problem. I never had that problem but couple of my friends did.

the problem could possibly be the teeth on the reverse gear and counter shaft are worn. trying to hit reverse gear without using your clutch can do this. you will definitely be able to see if this is the problem when you crack the trans case.

I have this same problem on my 99 si tranny. My first thought was the reverse fork was broken. How much does this usually cost to repair? should i just get a new tranny?
