Rethreading Question(s)
My crank pulley bolt decided that it was ready to come loose, and in doing so it messed up the threads in the crank. What's the best way to go about fixing the threads w/o buying a new crank? I've never used a tap/die before, any instructions would be helpful.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Go to Sears, they have most sizes there. Also , get some cutting fluid (oil). Then you will turn it in a little bit and you will feel it cutting, back it out, turn it in again a little further. Repeat the process until it is in to desired depth, adding cutting fluid as you go. I would buy a smaller one and practice on a scrap before doing your crank though.
If nobody responds, just take the bolt with you to Sears. Grab on of the dial calipers( they are usually just on a cardboard card) and measure the diameter of the bolt. Then count how many threads per inch. If you are off by 1 or 2, it shouldn't matter because they will only have certain pitches.
BUMP, because Home Depot and Sears both said I'm out of luck. Where else can I get a tap/die? I'll check a plain old hardware store tommorow I guess...
Anyone know the specs on a crank pulley bolt?

Ok, here's a picture with specs of the bolt.
I assume I need a 14mmx1.25mm tap and die? I've been looking everywhere (online, at sears/home depot/lowes, etc) and haven't found anything. Anyone know where I can get this tap and die?

Is it stripped out??...if so a tap will not fix it...if it is stripped you can try a helicoil insert to fix it...by the way most local hardware stores do not carry metric stuff....you need to go to an auto parts store....here is a link to the NAPA site for a 14x1.25 Helicoil kit...use this if the threads are shot...good luck!
PS...try searching a little harder...I found this info on metacrawler.com
