Default Replacing pistons and rings or just replace the rings?

the question is should i replace pistons and rings or just replace the rings? what do yall recommend i should do? i know i will have to hone the block. but would replacing all of the rings on the pistons fix my compression because i have a set of oem pistons rings that i brought. the sleeves are not scarred up.

The compression of the motor was 170-170-170-40psi
The motor is a B18c1 with Eagle Roads and Weisco pistons.

thanks

Doesn't sound like it's the rings at all. Not when it's that low, not when it's only one cylinder, and especially not when it's cylinder No. 4.

Why don't you think it's a head (valve) problem?

it could be, last time i check when i took out the cams when the head was off, all the valves was closed. only other thing i can thiink of it being that low is that the piston ringland got cracked, but the walls are not scarred up, still see cross hatching

If it were me, I'd start by checking the valves.

1. Turn the motor by hand until the No. 4 piston is at TDC
2. Pull the head off.
3. Set the head on a workbench (on its side) and fill the ports with alcohol. If a valve is even slightly bent, the alcohol will pour through into the combustion chamber.

Souds like my gsr before I rebuild it. cyl 1 240 psi cyl 2 239 psi cyl 3 40psi cyl 4 240 psi. We leak down tested the motor before pulling it apart and we has air blowing out the intake so it was obvious.
Ended up being a intake vale not seating.

there is a way to test for the seating quality of valves w/ the head off but i can't recall at this moment..

btw, broken ring lands don't necessarily mark up the walls...i've broken quite a few w/o leaving any booboos behind.
