replace tensioner pulley
i just got finished building the head on my b16 and i was wondering if i needed to replace the tensioner pulley or if it was only the spring that needed to be replaced...right now the spring is weak and i can not get the timing belt to stay in place...it keeps jumping teeth when i turn the crank...this is really starting to suck i really wanna get these valves adjusted and start her up...any help would be appreciated...please no hearsay as it gets me nowhere
...thanks
...thanks
I replaced the timing belt, water pump and tensioner pulley/spring when I rebuilt my b18. It's certainly cheap insurance, as we all know what happens when valves contact pistons.
If yours is not 100% perfect, I'd replace it.
Prostreet Online OEM kits include all the aforementioned parts for just a little over $100 if memory serves. I'm more than satisfied with mine.

but isnt the pulley just a pulley...its the spring that actually causes the tension...right now its loose and kinda sags so its skipping teeth..especially since everything is new in the head so its a little harder to rotate then normal and that extra pressure with the loose pulley is causin it to jump teeth...im sure it is just the spring so when it comes in on monday ill try it out and let everybody know if it works or not...
whats the proper adjustment...i still havent even adjusted my valves because the belt keeps slippin .......so do i NEED to change the pulley as well or is the spring replacement sufficient
The bearing in the pulley could fail. I'd replace both if it were mine. It's your car, though.
Not to sound like an ***, but you are turning the engine counter-clockwise, right? And you didn't receive the wrong timing belt? Both would cause the problem you're describing.
The proper adjustment is detailed in the service manual, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was on this site somewhere. It goes something like: loosen the tensioner, with the engine at TDC, then rotate it 3 teeth on the cam gear, then tighten the tensioner to spec. But I'd look it up to be sure.
