if your careful and patient, a hammer will work. there are thicker parts of the lca that you can safely hit, just stay away from the hitting the joints themselves. after banging on the lca repeatedy, the ball joint and lca should pop apart.
on another note, did you remove the axle nut already. just checking to make sure you didnt forget. good luck removing your axles

Watched the hammer method work the other day at a shop, he just cranked the thing a few times and it popped out. The shock/spring will push down on the lower arm and the upper arm will stay up. Just pops loose.
I have a 1/2" breaker bar that is 2 feet long. I placed the end (well an inch from the end) of thebar in between the knuckle and the LCA, just towards the motor of the balljoint. Almost where the closer side of the pickle fork is in that pic above. Then I slowly stodd on the end of the breaker bar farthest from the balljoint, it pops the balljoint righ tout of the LCA in no time, like with 80 pounds of downforce I bet. very easy, even for super-tight balljoints. The idea is that the bar barely fits inbetween the knuckle and LCA, then when you apply leverage to the far end of the bar, it separates the balljoint from the LCA.
NICE!
