Default Lower Ball Joint

I had to remove my axles and upon removing I need to replace my lower ball joint but can't get it out. Any suggestions on how to remove this. What tools are required and can it be done without them, like just hammering? In the middle of the process, so please help. thx

thx guys. After just pounding away and not getting anywhere I figured I would ask for hints. But since everyone seems to say the same, just pound away, thats what I did. Had a buddy come iver and took turns beating the hell out of it. Needless to say its out. thx for replies.
