Default Removing crankshaft pulley

Is the easiest way to remove the crankshaft pulley (for a timing belt change) to remove the transmission and then wedge a bolt into the flywheel teeth? 'Cause that seems like an awful lot of work... is there an easier way to do this on a B16A or a D16A6?

The easiest way is to get a tool to do it properly. They sell a tool that goes in the crank pulley to hold it in place while you insert your socket through it.

The best way is to get a hold of a good impact wrench. You can take it to a shop and have them break torque on it if it's been on there a few years and frozen, then retighten it a bit below spec so you can drive home. Then just wrench it off.

Big James: Who sells a 'tool'? I've heard of them but never seen them... I'd certainly love to get one! I thought it was only for the B18C, though...

clockworks: I actually reinstalled it myself a while back, so it shouldn't be frozen... think I could break it loose myself if I just put the tranny in gear and use a big extension?

Put it in 5th gear and have someone step on the brake pedal. With a long pipe on a breaker bar, it should come off. I've done this after an impact wrench wouldn't loosen it.

Moroso has the tool you're looking for.. Even though a tool truck will have it readily available.. That's where I got mine SNAP ON all the way!!! Come to think about it I need to trade in my tool box for a bigger one....

Would autoZone rent out the chain wrench? How would I use it?

My timing got messed up yesterday while I was going down the highway and the belt skipped a few teeth

EDIT: I searched for these tools and it seems to me that they all would require a second person.

Chain wrench (I really dont see how this could work)

Crankshaft pulley wrench: looks ok, but I think I would bust my hand up using this thing?

i take the flywheel cover out and wedge a big screwdriver there, it works everytime.
you can also do it through the starter hole

Use an impact wrench.

Air tools come in handy in so many different situations, I don't see how anyone could NOT justify the cost!

yeah...but an impact wrench dont work all the time unless you have like a 800 pound one...
and a lot of people want a more economical way than buying a compressor and an impact gun....
not everybody floats in money

I have an IR 231 gun w/ 425 ft/lb's that has been through my entire car and 4 motors and it hasn't hit a bolt it couldn't bust yet!

And i'm the epitome of a broke college kid, but I scrapped up $350 for the compressor w/ tool set and IR gun, and have saved that much in blood and time. I've actually made most of my money back from various side-jobs for people.

Back to the original topic!

so lets state the obvious:
Best choice with less time, bla, bla

1)impact gun(over 300ft/lb's, cause i have a 250ft/lb one and it does not work most of the time)
2)crank pulley holder tool:
http://www.moroso.com/catalog/...27115
3)screw driver in flywheel
4)putting the car in 5th(not sure that works good since the car will still rock and makes it hard to concentrate the strenght)
