Default REDLINING AT 5500 rpm!!!

I had a buddy install a clutch kit for me a few weeks ago. He's a mechanic, so i thought he'd be familiar with the job, but the motor's been acting up since he gave it back to me. It happens randomly... i reach 5500 rpm, when vtec is supposed to kick in, and the motor behaves exactly as it does at the redline. If i turn the car off and on again, the problem stops, but eventually comes back. I don't know if the clutch install had anything to do with this, so i don't want to point any fingers, but i do want to know what's going on with my car. Please post a solution if you have one. PLEASE!!!

Check for loose wires and grounds. There's a ground wire for the ecu on the top of the thermostat housing, not uncommon to be left loose, and can cause erratic behavior.

is the car warmed up? cold rev limit is a little higher than 5500, but if it isnt warmed up it may cut earlier than you expect. just an idea.
