Rechiping
No real point.
Rechipping ECU's if for heavy mods that the ECU cannot handle.....you could get a cam. That would make more power then a ECU upgrade. But, you should have I/H/E before anything else.

...actually the main point of an ECU upgrade IS when you do camshaft upgrade. ECU & CAM upgrades are synonymous. Cams raise the powerband meaning a higher redline is needed to take advantage of the incresed powerband, along with other goodies such as bumped up fuel/timing maps...custom vtec & redline points.
98exShifter:
Camshafts basically change the powerband. Intake air & fuel consumption is increased which makes more power (if the camshaft brand is a known power- maker, that is).
There aren't too many aftermarket SOHC VTEC camshafts out on the market...but I do know that SKUNK2 is coming out with one....or it's out already. I'd look into it if I were you....but there's one downside when it comes to ECU reprogramming for you.... You have a 98 EX, I assume, correct? if so, those are OBD2 equipped vehicles, and all of the 96+ Honda/Acura ECU's are OBD2 which are a BIATCH to reprogram. So my suggestion to you are 2 options. Either stick with your stock ecu, even if you upgrade your camshaft, or, purchase an
OBD2-->OBD1 ecu jumper and OBD1 P28 ecu. BTW, OBD1 is the 92-95 civic/integra wiring/ecu type. The P28 ecu is way easier and more affordable to reprogram over any OBD2 ecu (come to think of it, I have a couple SOHC VTEC ecu's for sale if your interested). Not very many people reprogram OBD2 ecu's; you'll have a hard time finding someone that does. (plug time) BTW, I reprogram ecu's for JDMHONDAPARTS.COM, so if you're interested, hit me up
