rebuilding ls motor
hey guys, sorry im sure this question is been asked several hundred times, but i wasn't quite sure what to search under to find out exactly what i want.
basically i was given an ls motor that had a bad rod bearing. i want this motor to be something i learn on. ive read jeff evans gsr build and understand exactly what he's doing so i think thats a good start.
first things first, i want to do a total rebuild starting with the bottom end. not necessarily wanting to go with the most expensive setup. mostly oem stuff just to get the car running well and strong.
so since the bottom end on this motor had a knocking rod could i assume that the crank will be trash? can i get the crank balanced to fix it? is there anything i can do to see if the crank is trashed itself? i have a few different sets of micrometers, however im not sure if this is the proper instrument to determine if the crank is still good. if the crank was no good. could i also assume that the rods would be bad? im really hoping that i can still use the crank, rods and pistons... would this be a crazy idea to think that i could reuse these parts? do pistons have any type of wear where basically after so many miles you are going to want to get rid of them and go for new? is there a good way to inspect the ringlands?
like i said, im just trying to learn. if you know of a good write up, specifically on b18b's, that would be of great help. thanks to whoever can lend a hand.
